What should you look out for when buying fitted sheets?

When buying a fitted sheet, the most important factors to consider are the correct size, the height of the mattress, the material, and the quality of the construction. An elastic band around the edge ensures that the sheet fits as smoothly and securely as possible on the mattress.

Cotton can absorb moisture and is often considered comfortable against the skin. Adding spandex makes the fabric more stretchy and can improve the fit. The best fabric combination depends on your personal sleeping preferences and the specific mattress.

Independent certifications can also help guide your choice. The certification applicable to a specific fitted sheet is listed directly on the respective product page.

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100

Textiles labeled with the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 have been tested for a wide range of regulated and health-related harmful substances. The testing covers all components of the certified product. However, the label does not mean that a product is completely free of all chemical substances.

Cradle to Cradle Certified® GOLD

Cradle to Cradle Certified® is an independent product standard that evaluates, among other things, material health, recyclability, water and soil management, renewable energy, and social criteria. Some of our fitted sheets are certified at the Gold level. The certification applies only to the specific product listed.

Mary Rose is also a member of the Fair Wear Foundation. Fair Wear helps member companies identify risks to labor and human rights, implement improvements, and track progress. Membership is not a product certification and does not guarantee that all requirements are fully met at all times.

Which material is suitable for fitted sheets?

The choice of material affects how the fitted sheet feels against the skin, its elasticity, how much heat it retains, and how it should be cared for.

Cotton fitted sheets are absorbent and breathable. Jersey is stretchy, soft, and usually does not require ironing. An added percentage of spandex improves stretch and can help the sheet conform more easily to the mattress.

Fitted sheets made of woven cotton satin, on the other hand, have a smooth surface and are less stretchy. They must therefore be chosen to fit the mattress’s dimensions and height very precisely.

Information on material composition and applicable certifications can be found directly on the page for each product. A certification always applies only to the specific properties listed and does not automatically make a product fully environmentally friendly.

What sizes of fitted sheets are available?

Fitted sheets are available in various sizes. In addition to length and width, the height of the mattress should also be taken into account.

Common sizes include, among others:

• 90 × 200 cm

• 100 × 200 cm

• 140 × 200 cm

• 160 × 200 cm

• 180 × 200 cm

Depending on the model, other sizes may also be available. Be sure to check the specified height of the mattress edge to ensure that the fitted sheet completely covers the mattress and lies as flat as possible.

How often should a fitted sheet be changed?

How often a fitted sheet should be changed depends on personal sleeping habits, the season, and how much you sweat.

As a general guideline, it’s a good idea to change them about once every one to two weeks. If you sweat heavily, in hot weather, or have specific hygiene requirements, changing them more frequently may be advisable.

How to care for a fitted sheet properly?

Always follow the instructions on the care label. The appropriate washing and drying temperatures may vary depending on the material, color, and construction.

Wash fitted sheets with similar colors and use a detergent suitable for the fabric. Bleach should only be used if the care label expressly permits it.

Do not exceed the washing temperature indicated on the label. Depending on the material, higher temperatures may cause shrinkage, color changes, or accelerated wear of the elastic fibers.

You can also check the care label to see if a fitted sheet is suitable for the dryer. If it is safe to dry in the dryer, we recommend using the gentlest cycle possible. Alternatively, you can let the sheet dry completely in a well-ventilated area.

How to Fold and Store Fitted Sheets Properly

Fitted sheets can be folded to save space by tucking the elastic corners into each other:

1. Tuck the corners in: Hold the fitted sheet by two adjacent corners and tuck one corner into the other. Repeat this with the remaining two corners.

2. Fold the sheet lengthwise: Place the sheet on a flat surface and smooth it out as much as possible. Fold the sides inward until it forms a rectangle.

3. Fold the sheet: Then fold the rectangle to the desired size.

Store the fitted sheet completely dry in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated closet.
