Cradle to Cradle (C2C) is a design principle developed by Michael Braungart and William McDonough that uses nature’s cycles as a model for industry and production. Instead of consuming raw materials and ultimately disposing of them as waste, products are designed from the outset so that their materials, after use, are either biodegradable and returned to nature as nutrients, or can be repeatedly incorporated into new products as technical raw materials of consistent quality. Ideally, this completely eliminates waste.

Based on this principle, the independent Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute awards the internationally recognized C2C certification. This certification confirms that a product has been consistently developed in accordance with these circular economy principles. This is also true of our Cradle to Cradle Certified® GOLD collection. These products are entirely safe for the biological cycle—from the organic cotton fabric, to the sewing thread and buttons, all the way to the woven and product labels and the color pigments. Everything can be returned to the earth without leaving any residue, thereby becoming nutrients for new plants.
