The GOTS certificate -
What is it actually?
"Something to do with sustainability", you might be thinking. And you're definitely right. But what exactly does GOTS-certified mean? We'll explain it to you here. And we're very happy to do so. After all, the majority of our Mary Rose products - from organic bed linen and terrycloth to home and kitchenware - bear this seal of approval.
More than organic
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standardand is the world's leading sustainability certificate for textiles made from organically produced natural fibers. It sets uniform, controllable standards for the entire manufacturing process and defines minimum ecological, social and animal welfare requirements for production.

Over 90% of our bed linen range is GOTS certified
The GOTS certification
To be awarded the GOTS seal, the following areas are closely scrutinized:
- Organic fibers
At least 70% certified organic fibers are required for the first label level - "Made with organic materials". If a textile consists of 95% or more organic fibers, the premium label "Organic" is awarded. - Formaldehyde - no thanks!
Harmful chemicals or toxic heavy metals have no place in GOTS textiles. This not only applies to production, but also starts with cultivation: Chemical pesticides or fertilizers are just as taboo as genetically modified plants. Responsible animal husbandry is mandatory for wool products and neither antibiotics nor synthetic growth hormones may be administered. - 1A quality
GOTS-certified terry cloth and table or bed linen is not only ecologically safe, but also of the highest quality. All products are tested for shrinkage, lightfastness and abrasion resistance. - Minimum social requirements
The strict standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO) apply to processing, production and trade. This means
- fair pay for the workers
- regulated working hours
- healthy and safe workplaces
- prohibition of child labor, discrimination, violence or harassment in the workplace - Environmental protection
Legal environmental standards must be observed in the production of GOTS textiles. These include wastewater treatment plants where the water is purified before being returned to the water cycle. - Accurate labeling
To ensure that they are not contaminated with "prohibited" substances or non-GOTS-certified goods, products made from organically produced natural fibres must be accurately labeled. - Packaging and transportation
Sustainability is not only a priority in production, but also in terms of packaging and transportation. For example, paper and cardboard packaging must be made from recycled materials.
