Comforter too short? When you should buy an oversized duvet
Well, have you been struggling with your comforter at night again? We know the problem - the standard bed dimensions are still designed for an average height of 1.75 m, which leads to problems sleeping for many people. Because we move around a lot at night, we need a sufficiently large comforter and matching bed linen so that we are still well wrapped up and our feet don't come out unintentionally.
What exactly is excess length/oversize?
Depending on the country, there is a certain standard size for comforters and bed linen that is - or at least was - designed for the majority of the population. The common standard sizes for Austria and Germany are:
Austria: 140x200 cm comforter, 70x90cm pillow
Germany: 135x200 cm comforter, 80x80cm or 40x80cm pillow
As we have become larger and larger in the course of evolution, the standard size only covers today's needs to a limited extent. For this reason, it is advisable to buy comforters in oversized or extra-long sizes:
Oversize: 140x220 cm
Oversize: 200x220 cm
When do I need an excess length/oversize?
As a general rule of thumb, the comforter should be approx. 20 cm longer than your own body size. If you measure yourself, add the 20 cm and end up between two sizes, then you should choose the next larger comforter size. To make the theoretical explanation a little easier for you, we have a small calculation example for you:
You are 182cm tall. Add the suggested 20cm to your height and you end up with 202cm. In this case, you might be tempted to go for the standard size instead of the extra length, as it is "only" 2 cm. However, we recommend that you switch directly to one of the two oversizes anyway, as they offer you more comfort and freedom than the standard size and ultimately give you a more restful night's sleep.
